Overview:

Toupret Exterior Skimcoat Filler is a cement-based powder filler for smoothing damaged and rough exterior masonry and render. It delivers a firm bond and a smooth, ready-to-paint finish across a wide range of substrates. The breathable formula allows moisture to pass through the substrate, and no priming or sealing is required before application.

It adheres to new and renovated surfaces, including concrete, cellular concrete, cement mortars, plaster, lime mortars, and renders. It also bonds to breeze blocks, bricks, and stone. Once dry, any water-based masonry paint or wall coating can go directly over it. If using polyurethane or epoxy solvent-based paints, a water-based primer coat is required first.

Working time extends up to 6 hours, and the filler can be applied up to 5mm thick. At 1mm thickness, approximately 1.2kg covers 1m². The surface is ready to paint within 24 to 48 hours, depending on coat thickness, substrate type, and site conditions.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Extra smooth finish: Produces a flat, even surface ready for painting without additional preparation.
  • Breathable formula: Allows moisture within the substrate to escape, decreasing the risk of trapped damp beneath the coating.
  • No priming required: Can be applied directly to most exterior substrates without a sealant or primer coat.
  • Extended working time: Up to 6 hours of working time provides flexibility on larger projects or in different conditions.
  • Strong adhesion: Adhesion to substrate exceeds 0.8 MPa, tested to EN 16-566, providing a firm and lasting bond.
  • Wide substrate compatibility: Bonds to concrete, plaster, render, cement mortars, lime, breeze blocks, brick, and stone.
  • Suited to large surface areas: Smooth application makes it well-suited for covering expansive wall sections in fewer passes.
  • Application thickness up to 5mm: Can be built up in a single coat, reducing the number of passes needed on deeper repairs.
  • Good coverage rate: Approximately 1.2kg covers 1m² at 1mm thickness, giving practical yield from a 5kg bag.
  • Paint-ready in 24 to 48 hours: A short wait before overcoating helps to keep projects on schedule.
  • Powder format: Mix only what you need per session, cuts down waste on jobs split across multiple visits.
  • Conforms to BS EN 16566:2014: Manufactured to meet the British and European standard for fillers for internal and/or external works.
  • Guarantee: Guaranteed for 6 months from the date of purchase, (stored in the original packaging and away from moisture and humidity).

Typical Applications

  • Damaged exterior walls: Smoothing cracked or deteriorated masonry and render on house fronts, rear elevations, and outbuildings.
  • Rough render levelling: Filling and flattening uneven render prior to painting or applying a wall coating.
  • Concrete surface preparation: Covering imperfections on shuttered or cellular concrete panels before painting.
  • Plaster and lime render restoration: Restoring aged or weathered lime mortar and plaster on older or listed properties.
  • Large surface skimming: Applying a continuous smooth coat across wide exterior wall sections before decoration.
  • Mixed-material walls: Levelling exterior walls made up of several different materials, such as brick, block, and mortar.
  • Pre-paint preparation: Preparing exterior surfaces to receive masonry paint, wall coatings, or a further filler top coat.

How to Use

  • Surface preparation: The substrate must be hard, cohesive, clean, sound, and dry. Prepare surfaces in line with current trade practices before applying the filler.

  • Mixing: Add 300ml of water per 1kg of powder (30% mixing rate). Add the powder to water at room temperature, then stir until smooth and free of lumps.

  • Application: Apply using a coating blade, putty knife, or trowel in coats up to 5mm thick. Do not apply below 5°C or above 35°C, or where relative humidity exceeds 80%.

  • Second coat: Apply a second coat once the first is hard and dry to the touch. Do not re-work the filler once it begins to set.

  • Painting: Allow the filler to dry fully before overcoating - typically 24 to 48 hours. Apply a water-based primer before using polyurethane or solvent-based epoxy finishes.

  • Tool cleaning: Once dry, product residue can be rubbed off tools. Water cleaning after use is not necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  • How long does exterior filler take to dry before painting?
Toupret Exterior Skimcoat Filler is usually ready to paint within 24 to 48 hours. The actual drying time depends on the coat thickness, substrate type, and the ambient temperature and humidity at the time of application.

  • Can you skim coat an exterior wall?
Yes. This product is designed specifically for skimming exterior walls. It can be applied over a wide range of substrates, including render, concrete, plaster, and masonry, producing a smooth surface ready for painting.

  • Which exterior filler works on walls built from mixed materials?
Toupret Exterior Skimcoat Filler bonds to multiple substrate types, including cement mortars, concrete, plaster, lime render, breeze blocks, brick, and stone. This makes it a sensible option where different materials meet on the same wall.

  • What is the maximum thickness for exterior skimcoat filler in one coat?
The filler can be applied up to 5mm thick in a single coat. The typical recommended application thickness for general surface smoothing is around 1.5mm.

  • Do you need to prime or seal the surface before applying exterior skimcoat filler?
No. Toupret Exterior Skimcoat Filler does not require a primer or sealant on most exterior substrates before application. The substrate must be hard, clean, sound, and dry before the filler is applied.
