Pros: on using a surform no real skill needed very Light in the hand Good for shaving off small amounts of wood taking off leading edges of doors can also be used to shape wood and many other materials.

Cons: on using a surform does not give a perfectly smooth finish, you have to press quite hard and keep the blade clean, a little more pressure is needed to break through paint layers.

For a perfectly smooth finish depending on the grain a block plane or smoothing plane would be the next step but skill is required for these tools.
