• Good for shaving off small amounts of wood, such as taking off leading edges of doors.

Cons on using a surform

• Does not give a perfectly smooth finish
• You have to press quite hard and keep the blade clean
• A little more pressure is needed to break through paint layers.

For a perfectly smooth finish depending on the grain a block plane or smoothing plane would be the next step but skill is required for these tools.
