Overview:

Cromar Bitumen Primer Black 1 Litre is a fast-drying primer designed to provide a key before applying bitumen paints products and bitumen roof coatings. It promotes adhesion on a wide range of substrates, helping subsequent coatings bond more effectively and last longer.

Suitable for priming concrete, screeds, renders, bitumen felt, asphalt, brick and stone, weathered corrugated iron, mild steel, wood and other porous surfaces, it is ideal for small repair areas, patching work and detail priming. Once dry, it can be overcoated with compatible bitumen-based products as part of a waterproofing or protective system.

Key Features

  • Fast-drying black bitumen primer for use under bituminous coatings

  • Provides a strong key for bitumen paints and roof coatings

  • Suitable for a wide range of porous and non-porous surfaces

  • Can be used on concrete, screeds, renders, asphalt, felt and metals

  • Adheres to damp (but not wet) surfaces for practical on-site use

  • Resistant to rainfall within 20–30 minutes of application (conditions dependent)

  • Handy 1 litre tin – ideal for small jobs and patch priming

Specifications

  • Barcode: 5036684004817

  • Colour: Black

  • Size: 1 Litre tin

  • Type: Bitumen-based primer for bituminous coatings

  • Typical Substrates: Concrete, cementitious screeds, renders, bitumen felt, asphalt, weathered corrugated iron, steel, wood, asbestos cement, slate, lightweight concrete screeds

  • Drying / Rain Resistance: Resistant to rainfall typically within 20–30 minutes (conditions dependent)

  • Minimum Application Temperature: +5°C

Applications

  • Priming concrete roofs, floors and screeds before bitumen coatings

  • Keying cementitious renders and masonry prior to bitumen paint

  • Priming bitumen felt and asphalt surfaces before overcoating

  • Preparing weathered corrugated iron, mild steel, zinc and lead prior to bituminous protection

  • Treating porous surfaces such as asbestos cement, slate and lightweight screeds before bitumen paints

  • Local patching and detail work where a 1 litre tin is sufficient

How to Use

  • Ensure all surfaces are sound, stable, and as clean and dry as possible before application

  • Remove oil, grease, dust, dirt and loose debris; wire-brush loose rust from metal and treat advanced corrosion with a suitable rust inhibitor

  • Stir the primer thoroughly and apply evenly by brush or suitable roller, avoiding pooling

  • Allow the primer to dry fully before overcoating with bitumen paints or roof coatings; observe recommended drying times and conditions

  • Apply only when ambient and surface temperatures are above +5°C and falling rain is not expected during the early drying period

Approximate Coverage Rates

  • The coverage per litre will vary with surface porosity and texture:

    • Metal surfaces: approx. 6–12 m² per litre

    • Concrete and other porous surfaces: approx. 6–8 m² per litre

    • Lightweight concrete screeds and asbestos cement: approx. 3.5–5 m² per litre

Cromar Bitumen Primer Black 1 Litre – Key FAQs

  • What surfaces can I use Cromar Bitumen Primer on?
It is suitable for concrete, screeds, renders, bitumen felt, asphalt, weathered corrugated iron, mild steel, zinc, lead, wood, asbestos cement, slate and other porous substrates before applying bitumen coatings and bitumen flashing tapes.

  • Do surfaces need to be completely dry before priming?
For best results, surfaces should be dry, although the primer will adhere to damp (but not wet) surfaces. Avoid application to visibly wet or waterlogged areas.

  • How long should I wait before overcoating with bitumen paint?
Allow the primer to dry thoroughly before applying further bitumen coatings; drying time depends on temperature, ventilation and film thickness, but it is typically rain-resistant within 20–30 minutes.

  • Can I use this primer in cold weather?
Do not apply when the temperature is below +5°C. Low temperatures and high humidity will slow drying and can affect performance.

  • How much area will a 1 litre tin cover?
Coverage varies with surface type: on metal and smooth concrete you can expect more coverage; on rough or very porous surfaces coverage will be at the lower end of the stated ranges, so always allow for this when estimating quantities.
