MPN: APR/251
Colour: Black
Size: 2.5 Litre Tin
Overview:
Cromar Bitumen Primer Black 2.5 Litre is a fast-drying, high-adhesion primer designed to provide a strong key before applying bitumen paints and bituminous roof coatings. It helps subsequent coatings bond more effectively and perform better over time.
Suitable for use on concrete, cementitious screeds, renders, bitumen felt, asphalt, weathered corrugated iron, mild steel, wood and other porous surfaces, this 2.5L trade tin is ideal for priming larger areas as well as patch repair work prior to bitumen-based waterproofing or protective treatments.
Key Features
Fast-drying black bitumen primer for use under bituminous surface coatings
Promotes excellent adhesion for bitumen paints and roof coatings
Suitable for a wide range of porous and non-porous substrates
Can be used on concrete, screeds, renders, asphalt, felt and metals
Adheres to damp (but not wet) surfaces for practical site use
Resistant to rainfall typically within 20–30 minutes of application (conditions dependent)
2.5 litre tin ideal for medium to larger priming projects
Specifications
Brand: Cromar

Colour: Black
Size: 2.5 Litre tin
Type: Bitumen-based primer for bituminous coatings
Typical Substrates: Concrete, cementitious screeds, renders, bitumen felt, asphalt, weathered corrugated iron, steel, wood, asbestos cement, slate, lightweight concrete screeds
Rain Resistance: Typically resistant to rainfall within 20–30 minutes (depending on conditions)
Minimum Application Temperature: +5°C
Applications
Priming concrete roofs, decks and screeds before applying bitumen coatings
Keying cementitious renders and masonry prior to bitumen paint or roof compounds
Priming bitumen felt and asphalt roof surfaces before overcoating
Preparing weathered corrugated iron, mild steel, zinc and lead prior to bituminous protection
Treating porous substrates such as asbestos cement, slate and lightweight screeds before bitumen products
Medium-sized roof and floor priming jobs and general patch repair work
How to Use
Ensure all surfaces are sound, stable and as clean and dry as possible before application
Remove oil, grease, dust, dirt and loose debris; wire-brush loose rust from metal and treat extensive corrosion with a suitable rust inhibitor
Stir the primer thoroughly and apply evenly by brush or suitable roller, avoiding excessive pooling
Allow sufficient drying time before overcoating with bitumen paints or roof coatings; always follow manufacturer recommendations for drying intervals
Apply only when ambient and surface temperatures are above +5°C, and avoid application if rain is expected during the early drying period
Approximate Coverage Rates
Coverage per litre depends on porosity and surface profile:
Metal surfaces: approx. 6–12 m² per litre
Concrete and other porous surfaces: approx. 6–8 m² per litre
Lightweight concrete screeds and asbestos cement: approx. 3.5–5 m² per litre
(As a guide, a 2.5L tin may cover roughly 15–30 m² on smoother metal and 9–20 m² on more porous surfaces, depending on condition and texture.)
Cromar Bitumen Primer Black 2.5 Litre – Key FAQs
What surfaces can I prime with Cromar Bitumen Primer 2.5L?
It is suitable for concrete, screeds, renders, bitumen felt, asphalt, weathered corrugated iron, mild steel, zinc, lead, wood, asbestos cement, slate and other porous substrates prior to bitumen coatings and tapes.
Do surfaces need to be completely dry before I apply the primer?
For best results, surfaces should be dry, but the primer will adhere to damp (not wet) surfaces. Avoid use on visibly wet or waterlogged areas.
How long should I leave the primer before applying bitumen paint or coating?
Allow the primer to dry thoroughly before overcoating. Drying time will vary with temperature, ventilation and film thickness, but it is typically rain-resistant within 20–30 minutes in good conditions.
Can I use this primer in cold weather?
Do not apply when the temperature is below +5°C. Cold or very damp conditions will significantly slow drying and can affect adhesion and performance.
How much area will the 2.5 litre tin cover?
Coverage per tin will vary by surface: on smoother metal you can expect coverage towards the higher end of the range, while rough or very porous surfaces will give coverage at the lower end. Always allow a safety margin when estimating quantities.
Also Available is Cromar Bitumen Primer 1 Litre
(Please note that tins will get dented in transit and this is not a reason for return please do not purchase tined products if this is an issue for yourself.)
