How to use and why

A bicycle spoke wrench or spoke key used to adjust wheel spokes in order to true a wheel I.E. put it back into alignment

With your bike upside down, grab a pair of spokes on either side of the wheel and squeeze them together and continue this all the way around one side of the wheel this will help you determine which spokes are loose, which are to tight, next do the same to the spokes on the other side of the wheel. make sure to check every last spoke to determine which of them are out of balance. the spokes on the drive side of a rear wheel may have higher tension than those on the other side by design so focus on whether the spokes are balanced and make a note of overly loose or tight spokes by marking them as you go, tighten but do not over tighten the spokes with the spanner, only a little at a time.

If the wheel is out of alignment use your thumb up against the wheel edge using the frame to steady your hand in one position, Most often, the rim will be out of true where the loose spoke is located and will wobble toward the frame in the opposite side of where that spoke is anchored into the hub. In most cases, tightening the spokes that attach to the hub on the side opposite the wheel’s wobble this will fix this problem a little at a time is best

Tip Do not rush this job or you will find that you will make the wheel worse than before. overly bent spokes will need replacing the correct tensions will never be retained on a bent spoke.
