How to Fix a Damaged Caravan Roof

Here in the UK, we are a nation of caravan lovers with over 555,000 caravan homes recorded in current use. While moving from location to location maybe the idea of heaven for many of us, it’s important to remember maintenance and repairs are essential. Just as you would repair breaks in a fixed roof to prevent more extensive damage, caravans must also be tended to regularly. And caravan roofs are one of the most prone areas for damage. So how do you fix common damage here?

Most Common Damage to Caravan Roofs

Most caravans have sheet aluminium cladding on the outside. This keeps the vehicle lightweight for towing to different locations while also providing weather resistance in various conditions. However, while this material is very well suited to this application, it is also prone to damage. Most caravans will have sheets of 0.5mm - 0.7mm at most and, with aluminium being so pliable, means the outside of a caravan can become dented and cracked easily. Excessive damp can also cause weak spots or leaking over time, accelerating cracks and increasing the chance of damage.

If we also consider the location of most campsites, there is an increased chance of parking underneath trees. Fallen seeds, acorns and even animals can also increase the load on caravan roofs and lead to damage in the future.

How to Repair Cracks in Caravan Roof

The good news is that most smaller cracks in caravan roofs can be repaired easily, without the need for additional labour.

  1. Access the Area

Set up a ladder and review your roof to identify the cracks that need fixing.

  1. Wipe Away Any Dirt

Clean around the area to make sure the sealant used adheres properly to the roof surface.

  1. Fill in the Crack

Depending on the width of the crack, you will either need to use a specialist patching cement followed by a sealant such as the Sika Sikaflex 522 Caravan Sealant Adhesive. Suitable for external and internal use, it requires only one application and is resistant to both ageing and weathering alike.

The right sealant and tools will allow you to extend the lifespan of your caravan for many years to come. If you have any questions or would like to speak to a member of the team, please do get in contact with us here today at Sealant & Tools Direct.
