What is Sealant?

A sealant is a chemical material which is used to fill spaces, whether it be a gap, cracks, or seams. Most sealants are airtight and waterproof. This prevents moisture from entering the sealed gap, which can prevent mould or mildew from growing within the gap.

Some Sealants are resistant to mould and mildew, but some are not. Almost all sealants have an adhesive nature meaning they can easily stick to surfaces once applied, and can help to secure whatever it is attached to.

Some sealants are better to use inside, whilst others are suitable to use outside, and others are equally applicable in both scenarios.

Sealing can be used for panelling, tiling, and a wide variety of home development uses, by professionals and DIY enthusiasts alike.

What happens if I don’t use sealant?

Neglecting to use sealant can have a variety of detrimental effects depending on the area in question. A general detrimental effect would be the ability for moisture and eventually mould to develop in the unsealed space.

In addition, using tiles as an example, neglecting to use sealant on them (not all tiles need sealant) will result in dirt, bacteria, and moisture invading the tile, resulting in it looking and being dirty.

Grab and hybrid adhesives - what’s the difference?

What is a grab adhesive?

Grab adhesive is a type of adhesive that is mainly suitable for home renovation and construction. The special property of this kind of adhesive is that it can bond surfaces that are made from different materials. Like wooden skirting onto a wall etc.

Grab adhesives provide an extremely reliable and powerful connection once the adhesive has set. Hence, why it is used in home development, which is the last place you would want any adhesive to come loose!

What is a hybrid adhesive?

A hybrid adhesive contains the feature of a grab adhesive, in that it can bond surfaces of different materials. Additionally, a hybrid adhesive also has the capabilities to act as a sealant, opening the doors for a larger variety of uses with just one adhesive.

Grab vs hybrid adhesive, which is better?

Hybrid adhesives are the clear winner. Due to the fact that hybrid adhesives can not only allow different materials to stick together, but also can be used as a sealant, allowing for more kinds of application.

The designer's guide to revolutionising designs with grab and hybrid adhesive sealant

For any tradesman or DIY enthusiast, knowing how your materials can make life easier for you is the key to having a smoother job. That’s why grab and hybrid adhesive sealants are so good, they do their jobs without any hassle.

Below, we will share with you some guidance in using both of these adhesives.

How to use grab and hybrid adhesives

In truth, grab adhesives have a one function, and that is simply, to stick. So with that understanding, how do you get the most out of something so simple? Put simply, you don’t overcomplicate it.

The same goes for hybrid adhesive, as we have established, they have an additional function of being uses as a sealant too. Unsurprisingly, the method of application for both of these options is not very different at all. Below is a general process of how to use these products.

  • Clean the surfaces you wish to apply the adhesive on, clean it from all dirt, grease, oil, and debris.
  • (Depending on the adhesive you have). Remove the top, apply the nozzle and cut it if you require a larger flow to come from the nozzle.
  • Place the cartridge in a sealant gun, this provides extra precision.
  • Apply the adhesive in a zigzag, within the perimeter of the surface, being careful not to use too much, otherwise the resulting pressure will squeeze some adhesive out.

If you choose to use your hybrid adhesive as a sealant, apply it slowly in a straight line in the space you wish to cover, then go over the area with a finishing tool to neaten the application.

  • Apply a heavy weight or clamp, although this depends entirely on the speed in which your purchased adhesive takes to stick.

Hybrid adhesives don’t require a clamp or weight if being used as a sealant, but can be done if you are sticking surfaces together like you would with a grab adhesive.

Things to avoid when using grab and hybrid adhesive

  • Mixing with another chemical, or different adhesive.
  • Contact with the eyes, mouth, or skin.
  • Applying the adhesive on an untreated surface.
  • Using too much adhesive.
