What is plasterboard? And why is it important?

Plasterboard, commonly known as ‘drywall’ is used within construction, in particular for lightweight framed commercial jobs and/or residential housing. It is made from calcium sulphate dihydrate, known is ‘gypsum’. It is used as a quicker alternative to traditional lath and plaster.

Plasterboard is essential as it is what used to create walls within a building, the plasterboard is attached to studs, but alternatively can be attached to brick and other walls made from masonry. It has the capability to be used as a lining for ceilings, and is known to be used to create complex architectural features such as curved walls and arches.

What happens if there is no plasterboard?

When it comes to your home, not using plasterboard could result in partitions being built in your home taking longer. There are many alternatives to plasterboard available, although some options may be more costly purely due to the work needed to create them.

What is coving? And what is its purpose?

Coving is a small barrier that is placed on the floor of a room, against the edges of the wall. Coving is not exactly a necessity that enhances structural integrity, but adds a level of personality, and aesthetic to a room. Without coving, rooms can look unfurnished, dull, and unappealing. It can have many forms depending on the plans.

The construction guide to enhancing projects with plasterboard and coving adhesives

Let’s start with plasterboard. Firstly, it's important to know that due to plasterboard’s porous surface, it can be used in conjunction with adhesive to attach to a variety of surfaces. There may be exceptions depending on the adhesive you choose, be sure to check the instructions of your chosen adhesive.

How to use adhesive with plasterboard:

  1. Dampen the wall you will be attaching plasterboard to in advance.
  2. With your sealant, using a sealant gun for a better accuracy, spray the back of the plasterboard, following the edges of the border, and use sparingly around the middle.
  3. After this, depending on the sealant you opt for, you may have to leave the sealant for a pre-determined amount of time, which your packaging will tell you.
  4. After waiting, apply the plasterboard onto the wall.
  5. EXTRA TIP — Start with the corners of the room and work your way around, rather than the middle of a wall.

How to use apply coving with adhesive

  1. Begin by holding the coving against the area it will be applied, to ensure it fits properly. You can stencil this area for future reference.
  2. Make sure the installation area is free from dust or other mess. Then ‘score’ the area that the coving will be attached to, score the area within the stencil, doing this will ensure a better stick.
  3. Apply the adhesive along the top and bottom edges of the coving, all the way across. It’s okay if some oozes out, as this will help to fill any gaps if there are any. Be sure to press the coving against the wall, go along the coving and push it slightly as you go along.
  4. This is an optional step, but can prove beneficial. You can lightly hammer panel pins, at roughly 6 cm intervals. This provides security as the adhesive sets.

Adhesives vs Glue

Specialist adhesives, such as the kind used for plastering and coving, differ from regular adhesives, which results in different levels of applications. Glue should not be used for things such as construction work. Here is an easy way to think of it is like this:

  • Tier 3 = Glue – Used for arts and crafts, small scale models, and art related projects. Can have a strong hold, but the easiest to separate. (Depending on the surfaces that are attached).
  • Tier 2 = Adhesives – Used to solve a wider range of issues. Can be used in arts and crafts, but is far more suited for repairing smaller objects or crafting complicated designs. It has a much more resilient hold, and can have options that allow for flexibility once stuck, or just a solid hold with little room for movement.
  • Tier 1 = Specialist adhesives. — Used by professionals in a wide spectrum of industries. Can be used in manufacturing furniture, doors, home development, construction, and jointing using wood, even some vehicle and boat repair, and much more.

This kind of adhesive provides the best possible hold, hence why it is standard amongst many industry professionals. Within this category, plasterboard and coving adhesives are found.
