How Carpet Tape Can Help to Speed up Installation

Carpet is one of the most popular ways to bring comfort and warmth into a property - especially during the colder seasons. Whether you’re a professional carpet fitter or looking to DIY the project on your own at home, it pays to have the right equipment. Traditionally, carpets were tacked or nailed down into place. This process, while being highly effective, can be laborious and difficult if you don’t have the necessary experience. This is why so many people opt for carpet tape instead.

What Is Carpet Tape?

As the name suggests, carpet tape is a special type of self-adhesive tape that creates a bond between your flooring substrate and the carpet. It is usually double-sided, making it easy to install and comes with a paper backing to keep the tack strong during application. Most types can be used to stick carpet to a variety of floor surfaces, including tiles, wood, concrete, stone and even bitumen floors with ease. In addition, it can also be used to affix rugs in a fixed place, reducing the risk of trips and accidents as a result.

Installation With Carpet Tape

Carpet tape not only speeds up the installation process. It also reduces the need for additional tools or equipment, making the entire process quicker and sometimes cheaper too. If you’re looking for a permanent installation, you need to make sure you choose a tape designed for this purpose as some are removable and only suited to temporary installations. The process is easy and straightforward enough for someone with no previous experience to achieve.

To use carpet tape:

  1. Layer the carpet out and allow it to sit for 1 hour. This gives the fibres time to stretch out and make the whole process easier.
  2. Roll half of the carpet back up to make space.
  3. Cut strips of your chosen carpet tape and stick it along the edges of your floor.
  4. Every foot, create an X shape with strips of carpet tape. This will increase the surface area, creating a stronger bond. Make sure to leave the protective paper layer on top until you’re ready to unroll the carpet.
  5. Unroll the carpet and roll up the other side. Repeat the taping process.
  6. Unroll the carpet again and make sure it lays flat on the floor. Make cuts at the corners and around the edges using an appropriate tool, such as the Hooked Utility Knife Blades.
  7. Re-roll half the carpet and remove the paper backing from the tape.
  8. Carefully lay the carpet on top of the floor, making sure it lays in the correct place.
  9. Repeat on the other side.
  10. Walk on top of the carpet and run it over with a carpet roller to make sure all of the carpets adheres to the tape. Make sure to pay attention to the edges and corners.
