What is a diamond cutting grinding disc?

A diamond cutting grinding disc is a bladed disc that can be used in conjunction with angle grinders, electric disc cutters, stone saws, and more products with similar functions and differing names.

These bladed discs are made specifically to cut materials that are otherwise impossible to cut cleanly. These materials are stone, tiles, concrete, marble, and other materials of this nature. That being said, some blades are only suitable for one material, whilst others are not.

The discs function by being spun at an extremely fast rate through the angle grinder (or other similar machine). If done correctly, the result is a clean cut through the material at hand.

Are diamond cutting grinding discs made from diamond?

Not exactly. Most diamond cutting grinding discs are made from steel, whilst the outer edges of the disc are made through a mix of synthetic diamond and metal powder and sintering them.

Sintering is a process similar to smelting, without actually melting the materials being used. The segment of the discs that hold the diamond and metal powder mix are known as the ‘cutting teeth’.

The process of sintering is what enables the disc to have the strength required to cleanly cut through the heavy-duty materials like concrete etc.

Can diamond cutting grinding discs cut wood?

Yes, however, surprisingly you will find that it will not be a clean cut at all. This is because the fibres of the wood are much more loose than the materials within concrete. Of course, wood can be cut cleanly, you just need to use the appropriate kind of saw or disc to facilitate this.

Using the wrong diamond cutting grinding disc

Using the wrong diamond cutting grinding disc on the wrong material can have the following effects.

  • The disc may shatter.
  • The cut may not be clean, or difficult to do.
  • The cut may damage the machinery or the surrounding area of the material being cut.

How long does a diamond cutting grinding disc last?

Diamond cutting grinding disc

Generally, you will find an expiry date on the packaging, specifications, or the discs themselves. Discs of different sizes, and sometimes materials will last longer or shorter than others, simply due to the kind of materials they are used on.

Regardless if you use the disc enough to wear it down or not, you will still find an expiry of 3 years from their manufacturer date.

Using an expired diamond cutting grinding disc

You should never use a diamond cutting grinding disc that is past its expiry date. This is because all discs contain a resin to bond the abrasive together. Through usage, and in some cases, storage conditions, the resin will absorb moisture, making it weaker over time.

As a result, using an expired disc will result in breakage. This means the disc will shatter whilst in use, a sharp disc spinning over 1000s of RPMS being shattered is dangerous for yourself and everyone in the vicinity. Resulting injuries can cause permanent damage, and even death.

Maintaining safety when using diamond cutting grinding discs

Here are a few simple things to be aware of to ensure the safety of all around you when operating with these tools and relevant machinery.

  • Wear the correct safety equipment.
  • Be aware of disc expiry dates before usage.
  • Inspect the machine and disc before usage.
  • Check the instruction manual regarding assembly and operation of the machine/discs.
