If you restore, finish or prepare woodwork or other materials such as metal and hard plastics, whether for professional or hobby and personal projects, you'll be aware of the importance of choosing the right sanding power tool, pad attachments and sanding sheets for the job.

At Sealants & Tools Direct, we are experts in all things DIY, so we have created a precision work manual, to use with your detail sander and to help you choose the right grit sanding sheets so you get the finish you require every time.

Sander Sheets

For finer sanding tasks you need good quality products that will allow you to sand the material and achieve the best result. Our versatile sander sheets from Sealants and Tools Direct are made from aluminium oxide. Sterated sanding pads are often finer than traditional types of sanding tools, making them perfect for those that require a finer grade of sanding material.

They are suitable for use in complex areas or for cleaning wood, glass and metal. You can also use them to carefully remove varnish, rust and paint. The sanding sheets are available in two options, a stearated triangle detail sander sheet and the classic hook and loop detail sander sheet. The sheets can be bought in packs, usually of 10 although you can buy them in larger packs if you use them frequently as part of your work.

Detail sanders

Detail sanders are power tools designed for fine and precise sanding. They’re often used for small and intricate areas of woodwork. They’re especially useful for more precise and controlled areas of wood, such as rounding edges, removing paint or varnish and preparing surfaces for finishing touches.

Detail sanders use pads and sanding sheets (abrasives) to sand down a surface. Some detail sanders have triangular sanding pads for even more intricate work. The pointed edge of the triangle shape is handy for getting into hard-to-reach places.

The versatile equipment can be used for both rough and fine sanding and on a variety of materials, including wood, metal, and plastic.

Who uses detail sander sheets?

Many tradesmen and DIY enthusiasts can benefit from using detail sanders and sheets, including wood flooring installers, joiners or people making home improvements. A detail sander allows you to add the finishing touches to any sanding work. This handy tool is essential for anyone doing woodwork or carpentry projects, especially for small or hard-to-reach places. The sheets are the abrasive material that is attached to the detail sander to create the desired effect.

How to use detail sander sanding sheets

Detail sanders are power tools designed for fine and precise sanding of small and intricate areas in woodworking and other DIY projects. They are particularly useful for tasks that require delicate and controlled sanding, such as smoothing out rough edges, removing paint or varnish, and preparing surfaces for finishing touches.

Sanding sheets, sometimes referred to as sandpaper sheets or sanding discs, are abrasive materials that are attached to the sanding pad of a detail sander. These sheets come in various grits and are designed for sanding and smoothing different types of surfaces. When you use a detail sander, you typically attach these sanding sheets to the tool's sanding pad to perform various sanding tasks.

Depending on the project you're working on, you will choose a grit type for your sanding sheets and attach them to your detail sander for precision work. The sanding sheets are attached to the detail sander using the pad. These pads are designed to hold and support the sandpaper or sanding sheets that perform the actual abrasive work during the sanding process. They come in various shapes and sizes to fit different detail sander models, allowing for precise and controlled sanding in small or intricate areas.

Sandpaper grit explained

The grit number is a measure of how coarse or fine the sanding sheet is. The rating is the size of the abrasive particles embedded in the sandpaper. The higher the grit number, the finer the abrasive particles, therefore, the smoother the finish. This means, that the lower the grit number, the coarser the finish will be but it produces a quicker material removal rate.

Faithful Palm Sanding Sheets

For heavy sanding and stripping, you need a coarse sandpaper sheet for your detail sanding tool, like the Faithful Palm Sander ¼ 60g Sheets. This sheet type is great for smoothing surfaces and removing imperfections. Use Faithfull Coarse Grit for maximum abrasion made from quarter e-weight aluminium oxide paper sheets for sanding wood, paints, plastics and fillers. They can be used with most orbital 1/4-size palm sanders.

For a medium grit, choose Faithful Palm Sander ¼ 80g Sheets. This type is ideal for stripping paint, blending joint seams and rounding sharp edges and corners. For a finer grit, choose Faithful Palm Sander ¼ 120g Sheets, ideal for smooth small and slight imperfections on surfaces.

Sanding Sheet Pads

Sanding pads are used with power tool sanders to support and protect sanding sheets. Sanding sheet pads provide a cushioning layer between the sanding sheet and the sanding pad of the sander. This cushioning helps distribute the pressure evenly, reducing the risk of creating deep grooves or uneven sanding marks on the workpiece.

We have a range of different sanding sheet pad attachments including Triton Multi Tool Sanding Sheet Pad Attachment. This is a Triton premium EVA hook and loop multi-tool detail sanding attachment for standing 90mm-93m detail sanding sheets.
