Geocel® Guide to Construction Primers

To obtain maximum performance from Geocel® sealants it is necessary to ensure that the correct joint design is used and that the surfaces to be sealed are properly prepared.

It is always essential to ensure that the surfaces are clean, dry, sound, frost free and free from dirt and grease, prior to application of any primer or sealant. It is strongly recommended that users follow the procedure given in the relevant product data sheet.

The use of a primer system has the following benefits:

        • Optimizes adhesion of sealant to surface

        • More rapid development of adhesion to surface

For some substrates, severe service conditions and certain types of sealant, priming is essential. For specific recommendations please contact Geocel® Technical Service.

PRIMER RANGE

The range of primers suitable for use with Geocel® sealants:

Geocel® Dow Corning Primer NP

Geocel® Dow Corning Primer P

Geocel® Dow Corning Barrier Primer

Geocel® Primer 120

Geocel® Primer 110

Dow Corning® Construction Primer P

Geocel Dow Corning Primer NP

Description

Geocel® Dow Corning Primer NP is a one component liquid primer used to promote adhesion of Geocel® 800 and Geocel® 201 Polysulphide sealants to non porous substrates

Instruction for use

Ensure surfaces are clean, dry and free from contaminants using a suitable solvent and a lint free cloth. Ensure surfaces are wiped dry immediately after cleaning. Always use a working container, but do not decant more primer than can be used within one hour. The lid of the original container should be securely replaced. Do not return unused primer to original container. Apply primer by dry, lint free cloth. Avoid over application. For clean up use methylated spirits. At normal temperatures and humidity conditions, the primer should be allowed to dry for a minimum of 30 minutes Sealant should be applied within 6 hours of primer application.

Geocel® Dow Corning Primer P

Description

Geocel® Dow Corning Primer P is a one component liquid primer used to promote adhesion of Geocel® 800 and Geocel® 201 Polysulphide sealants to porous substrates

Instruction for use

Ensure surfaces are clean, dry and free from contaminants using a suitable solvent and a lint free cloth. Ensure surfaces are wiped dry immediately after cleaning. Do not shake primer, stir well. Always use a working container, but do not decant more primer than can be used within one hour. The lid of the original container should be securely replaced. Do not return unused primer to original container. Apply primer by brush without overbrushing. For clean up use Dow Corning® R40 Cleaner. At normal temperatures and humidity conditions the primer should be allowed to dry for a minimum of 30 minutes Sealant should be applied within 6 hours of primer application.

Geocel® Dow Corning Barrier Primer

Description

Geocel® Dow Corning Barrier Primer is a two component liquid epoxy resin primer, used to promote adhesion of Silicone, MS and Polysulphide sealants to sensitive or friable porous substrates or conditions where prolonged water immersion is expected.

The two components are supplied in pre measured quantities and should be thoroughly mixed prior to use

Instruction for use

Ensure surfaces are clean, dry and free from contaminants. Cleaning with a solvent or wire brush may be necessary. Mix all of part A with part B. To do this, pour all of part A into part B container, replace lid and shake for at least 2 minutes. Apply mixed primer by brush to the surface to be primed. A thin uniform layer should be applied, avoiding areas that are not to be sealed. The primer should be allowed to air dry for one hour before application of the sealant. After mixing the primer should be used in 6 hours

Sealant should be applied within 6 hours of primer application.

Notes:

        1. Natural variation in surface finish and colour can affect adhesion to these substrates. For specific advice please contact our technical service department.

        2. For concrete, variations in raw materials, mix formulation and mould release agents can affect adhesion. For specific advice please contact our technical service department.

        3. Before use of solvents on plastics or coatings, it should be ensured that the solvent is compatible and will not damage the substrate.

        4. For some service conditions and or substrate surface finishes, a primer may be required. For specific advice please contact our technical service department.

        5. For prolonged water immersed service conditions / water retaining structures Geocel® Barrier Primer should be used

COMMENTS

The attached selection tables are given as a general guide on primer requirements for Geocel® sealants. This document is intended as a fast reference guide and should be read in conjunction with the data sheet for the specific sealant. The selection tables are not a substitute for project specific testing. For specific recommendations, please contact Geocel® Technical Service.

Special care needs to be taken in the case of total immersed conditions. Some surface treatments, paints, lacquers and coatings may inhibit the bond of sealants and in such cases advice should be sought.

The information contained herein is believed to be accurate and reliable; however it is the user’s responsibility to determine suitability of use. You should therefore thoroughly test any proposed use of our products and independently conclude satisfactory performance in your application.
